By the time a week had passed, Shivon's heel had gotten a bit taller. I took 3/4 of inch off and wanted to take more, but she was so terrified of loosing her heel that we stopped.
I was able to get her bars and frog in a passive position get a nice solid heel buttress in place. I did a crude job of whacking some toe off by using the nippers from the ground like Pete does it. . I wanted to clean the toe up but we still had to take X-Rays and the mare was very anxious to have this over and done.
The positive note was that she was able to weight her new heel and sole with a deep pad, and she actually rested her weight on the new foot - heel down - for a few minutes after we let her have it.
We were going to wrap and pad her foot, securing the pad with Duct Tape, so we left it at this point for a week. We still have a long way to go, but this is felt like a good first step.
I'll put the new X-rays up when I get them. |
